The Estate and the Vineyard

The Grand Vin of Château Monbrison is the flagship of the estate, crafted from the oldest vines, planted in 1963 by Elizabeth Davis and Christian Vonderheyden.

The work in the vineyard is meticulous and rigorous, with cultural practices perfectly suited to the terroir. Frequent yield controls ensure the best possible quality of the grapes. The harvest is done manually in crates, with parcel selection made for each cuvée. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new. An amphora aging trial is currently underway, showing very promising results.

This wine perfectly embodies its terroir. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot enhances the aromas, offering a perfect balance between silky tannins, fruity power, and acidity, true to the character of great wines for aging, which will improve over 15 to 20 years, or even longer for the best vintages.

Château Monbrison produces wines in the AOC Margaux on 15.5 hectares, located on the plateau at the exit of the commune of Arsac, towards Margaux. This terroir benefits from a perfect harmony between soil and climate. The Pyrenean gravel, several meters thick and made up of pebbles and various-sized stones, ensures excellent natural drainage and optimal fertility for the vines. The climate, relatively humid due to the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the banks of the Gironde, combines mild winters with warmer seasons, and moderate rainfall fosters healthy vine growth.

The estate is predominantly planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot. A small proportion of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot also enrich the vineyard’s blend. Since 2015, Monbrison has also been producing wines in AOC Haut-Médoc, on 6.5 hectares of clay-limestone soil, planted exclusively with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, located between the village center of Arcins and its port on the Gironde.

All the plots are managed using sustainable practices, and experiments are underway on some of them with the aim of converting the vineyard to organic farming.
