The Estate and the Vineyard
In 1924, Baron Philippe de Rothschild made the bold decision to bottle his wine directly at the Château, thus asserting his commitment as a responsible owner of Grand Crus in the face of the growing influence of the Bordeaux trade.
In 1926, he built the spectacular “Grand Chai” of Mouton, a symbol of innovation and the grandeur of the estate. In 1933, the Baron acquired a trading company in Pauillac, where he began producing and marketing Mouton Cadet, created in 1930. Today, it is the leading Bordeaux AOC brand worldwide.
Over the years, the family’s heritage grew with the acquisition of two classified growths: Château Mouton d'Armailhac in 1933 (which became Château d'Armailhac in 1989) and Château Clerc Milon in 1970, located on the prestigious terroir of Pauillac.
Baron Philippe also successfully combined art and wine by featuring contemporary works of art on the labels of Mouton Rothschild. Starting in 1945, each vintage was adorned with an original work created specifically for the estate by an artist. After 20 years of struggle to gain recognition, Mouton Rothschild was finally classified as a First Growth in 1973, following the signing of the decree by Jacques Chirac, who was the Minister of Agriculture at the time.
